President Susan Poser pulled back the curtain on an important administrative conversation.
In an article with The Chronicle of Higher Education, President Susan Poser disclosed Hofstra’s criteria for creating its peer institution list, which is a critical process that universities use to assess their values and priorities.
For Poser’s administration, she wrote, the process entailed determining which metrics mattered most in defining a peer and then measuring other institutions against those metrics. Some key metrics that were taken into account were the location of these schools, the number of students living on campus and the diversity of students on campus. In total, 18 final metrics were determined to finalize the search.
The article did not list all 18 – but it did point to a “data-driven” approach, highlighting the school’s location (just a train ride from New York City) as well as its Division I athletics.
On March 24, The Chronicle of Higher Education published a database highlighting prior years’ self-appointed peer institutions for schools across the country. Hofstra’s peers were as follows:
Long Island University C.W. Post
Seton Hall University
George Washington University
Quinnipiac University
Northeastern University
Syracuse University
St. Johns University
Ithaca College
Drexel University
Boston University
Marist College
Adelphi University
American University
Pace University
Fordham University
New York University

After an outpouring of student support, Croaky the cat is home safe and sound.
Last week, The Countdown reported on student efforts to locate Croaky, a missing tuxedo cat.
One of Croaky’s owners, Sydney Kenton, a junior drama and fine arts major told The Clocktower that Croaky has been found. The cat was located between Hamilton Road and Jane Street where several other wild cats were being fed. Sydney and the members of two other houses that live on Hamilton Street set up a cage on with food and catnip on Wednesday, April 20, and were able to successfully lure Croaky in.
Keaton thanked everyone for aiding in the search to find Croaky and spreading the word out to look for him. “It would’ve been way harder to find him without the community's assistance … my roommates and I were blown away with how kind everyone was," she said.
