The men’s rugby team fought the school – and won.

Hofstra reversed its ruling on the men’s rugby team championship after a petition gained 2,800 signatures in a matter of days.

The Hofstra men's rugby team was elated to be the first team in school history to make it to the historic May Madness tournament. Then, without warning, Hofstra declared they could not go. “We paid out-of-pocket, and now -- due to their arbitrary dismissal, like parents to a child -- we [were told we] can no longer go,” wrote team president Jake Shefcik, a Hofstra senior, in an email to The Clocktower.

Today, after weeks of back-and-forth with the team, they finally got the green light. Read more about their fight to get to New Orleans here.

Plus, Hofstra’s senate elections are going on right now. Here are the candidates.

Elections are being held right now for the undergraduate student body senate. Students can vote for four of the eight students running for a position. The elected representatives will serve a one-year term. The ballot is open until 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3, and can be accessed through the Hofstra student portal here

Here are the candidates:

  • Molly Botros:

Molly is a peer tutor at the Writing Center and has worked in the Office of Intercultural Engagement and Inclusion. Molly advocates for students to feel a sense of security, belonging and connection to campus resources.

  • Justin Fountain:

Justin is a freshman in the Dual Degree Physician’s Assistant Program. He was elected as senator in the Student Government Association and was then given the position of ethics and conducts chair. Justin was also elected as comptroller for the 87th senate.

  • Stephen Bauer:

Stephen is a junior finance major. He is currently involved in the Student Management Investment Fund and Tamid Group and was a member of Hardline Capital during his freshman year. He would like to make changes at Hofstra by strengthening the relationship between students and administration to make Hofstra a more welcoming place for prospective students.

  • Adallis Pantry:

Adallis is a political science major and hopes to one day work with the United States government. She is involved with Black organizations on campus and works for the Hofstra Chronicle. She is an advocate for student life as well as seeing changes happen on campus.

  • Lincoln Anniballi:

Lincoln is a freshman political science major and is involved in the Student Government Association. If elected, he wants to improve communication between students and professors, secure students extra credits without being charged and reduce the cost of inter-semester courses.

  • Kashmiraa Pandit:

Kashmiraa is a freshman political science major and has earned experience in several leadership positions. She wants to promote student voices and organizations and enhance the experience here at Hofstra.

  • Aleyana Boothe:

Aleyana is a sophomore urban ecology major with a minor in sustainability studies. She was previously a senator in SGA and the student representative for the Family Garden and Hofstra Tree Campus USA. If elected, Aleyana hopes to better advocate for students’ experiences on campus as well as bring attention to environmental concerns.

  • Lila Campbell:

Lila has served on the Usenate Student Affairs Committee and has built a stronger relationship between Public Safety and students. She hopes to keep improving this if elected, along with evaluating credit limits within Hofstra’s tuition.
